Since the salons have closed, we’ll show you how to save your locks during the lockdown.

Antoine isn’t afraid of a Zoom videoconference. Impeccably coiffed, he’s very much at ease. “When I felt that the quarantine was on its way, and saw my hairdresser still open, I decided I’d pass by. Luckily, they had space for me.” Before the salons, businesses not considered of primary necessity by the French government, closed their doors, some of us were able to get a cut and style. Others, by contrast, find themselves at a loss, their hair growing at an unbridled pace and no hairdressers to help them. If you find yourself in the second category, don’t worry: here are our tips to save your hair during the lockdown.

Let it grow

Has letting your hair grow ever crossed your mind? For a lot of guys who have, the most difficult period is that “in-between” stage. “I went through an in-between stage that wasn’t great, when I wore my baseball cap a lot”, said Théo Termignon. Since you’re probably staying in for the next few days, or even weeks, why not make the most of it, and make it through this in-between phase in the comfort of your own home? This way, you can (finally) wear our hair long once quarantine is over. A new man.

Back and sides

Not ready to go long just yet? OK, you’ve got several options, depending on your expertise. Jules, a hairdresser, told us you should “make sure you pay attention to your neck. Even if your hair is growing out, a well maintained back and sides will keep it looking reasonably clean and tidy, so you don’t need to worry about the top”. So, making sure your sideburns and the nape of your neck don’t get too long and scruffy will ensure your cut looks fresh — even if it’s a few weeks old. For this, clippers or a beard trimmer are your best bets.

Shave it off

Like those who dream of letting their hair grow long, many guys dream of shaving it all off. But many find it hard to take the leap. During quarantine, a buzzcut is a great way to solve two problems: no need for a hairdresser, and no need to worry about your cut growing out. Because now, you’re doing it yourself, with the help of some clippers, and you can do it whenever the mood takes you.

Use YouTube

Some guys struggle with change. For those of us stuck on maintaining their cut as it it, and who are feeling brave, check out YouTube: a quick search for “man hair tutorial” throws up thousand of videos showing you how, with some patience and a little dexterity, you can maintain your fade. It’s no coincidence that Google Trends has noticed a spike in this search in France since the 15th of March. You are not alone.

Most importantly, you do you. And whatever you do, be understanding. Quarantine is a tricky time for everyone, so go easy on your friends’ haircuts during this time — and go easy on your own too.
